Contested territories of Palm Oil in Ecuador: monoculture, violence and community resistance

As part of the Festival of GEONovember 2024, we are pleased to invite you to the new lecture ‘Contested territories of Palm Oil in Ecuador: monoculture, violence and community resistance’.

The lecturer for this seminar will be Nathalia Paola Bonilla Cueva, member of Acción Ecológica (Ecuador) since 20 years.  Currently, she is responsible for the forest protection campaign, specifically aimed at safeguarding forests from the threat of deforestation caused by multinational corporations in the agricultural and timber sectors.

The seminar will focus on the impacts of oil palm cultivation, particularly in relation to the ongoing socio-environmental conflict in the province of Esmeraldas, where the expansion of oil palm cultivation has largely been based on the expropriation of the afro-descendant and indigenous population territories. The current socio-environmental impacts, caused by the use of pesticides, lack of human and labour rights and all the dynamics created by the agribusiness industry of oil palm, are ensured through the use of sustainable certification schemes, in particular the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) that make oil palm companies completely independent in the management of the land and the conflicts they generate.

The lecture is organized in the framework of the course “Geovisualization of territorial change: Digital Earth and Participatory GIS” of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master programme CCD-STeDe (Climate Change and Diversity: Sustainable Territorial Development).

The conference will be held on Thursday the 28th of November | 16.00 – 18.00 (GMT + 1)

Introduced by: Prof. Salvatore Pappalardo, Coordinator of the course “Geovisualization of territorial change: Digital Earth and Participatory GIS”

Discussant: Edoardo Crescini, PhD Student of ICEA Department, University of Padova

The conference will be online on YouTube (in English) and it will be held with simultaneous translation into Spanish on Facebook
